The Vango Icarus 600 is a new size being introduced into the highly popular range for the 2010 season. The Icarus range is likely to prove even more popular in2010 due to the fantastically simple'as-one' easy to pitch system and the simple 3-pole no hassle construction will make it the most ideal of weekend tents.
The tent frame is constructed using Powerflex fiberglass poles, a Protex 2000Polyester flysheet (2000mm hydrostatic head protection) and as is the norm these days, the groundsheet is fully sewn-in to keep out unwanted pests and draughts. The other key features of the tent include, as-one pitching, single 6-berthsleeping compartment (with roll back divider), TBS tension band system for extra strengthening in adverse weather, 10,000mm HH internal groundsheet, side'J' door with mesh double door, heavy duty continuous poles sleeves, storm skirts, pelmet with storage pockets, cable entry point, front door mesh vent, reflective webbing, (helps aliens encounter you)'Crystal Clear' windows (with internal covers), breathable fabric inner tent, parallel zipped front door can be used as a sun porch (porch poles not provided). Handled carry bag and repair kit included. The main tent is 1.9m tall (6ft 3in), 4.65m (15ft 3in) long x 3.35m (11ft) wide, with a bedroom area of 2.1m (6ft 10in) length which has the option of then being divided in half with an internal room divider. The front porch seating and eating area is then at least as big again to give plenty of room to be comfortable under cover. These very popular tents are perfect for a family getaway without having to crawl in and out of a cramped smaller tent. We have slept in this tent for a total of less than 10 days so it is almost as good as new. It has been to the New Forest, Cumbria (where it was pitched on sloping ground but coped, main picture) and Norfolk. Ive pitched it in the garden for the other photos.
It has never leaked and there are no tears in any of the fabric. It has always been stowed dry, aired at home after returning home to ensure that it was bone dry before being packed. However, I have given up trying to get it into the original bag so the poles and pegs stay outside; I blame arthritis in my hands so maybe you could do better. The bedroom consists of one inner with a'curtain' divider which can be rolled away. There is plenty of space in the front section for a table and chairs along with a camp kitchen etc.
There are plenty of vents for fresh air. The head height is great. So why are we parting with it? It doesnt suit our needs. We now have a backpacking tent (for proper wild camping) with the option of using a tarp to increase our living area when on a campsite.
I would rather know that this tent is being used even if we dont get much for it. It is advertised as a 6-berth tent but would suggest no more than 4 adults can be accommodated comfortably. It can be erected by one person but it is tricky unless there is not a puff of wind and this led me to crack a pole on its first outing. I have taped this up so that it is probably stronger than it was originally, though it does not bend quite as much.
The photos also show a broken loop, which can easily be fixed with a new loop of elastic or para cord. Pitching instructions are sewn into the bag. Vango Family - Icarus tent filmed 2010. Reviews of the tent can be found here. I might need to send it as two separate parcels (perhaps the poles and pegs in a separate package) to ensure that neither package exceeds 15 kg.
